We have a great bunch of guys and this is a competitive league.
We run our league a little different than most. Each owner will keep 6 players from their existing rosters, with the rest going into the 2013 draft pool. You will declare which 6 you want to keep a few days before the draft begins.
Another thing we do to maintain competitive balance is to limit the amount of time you can hold a player. We put 3 year contracts on every player. So every player will go back into the pool to be drafted at least every 3 years (like free agents). Since only 60 guys are protected each season, there are always decent players available in the draft.
The expiration dates may also influence who you want to keep and influence decisions when making trades. In addition to determining fair value, you must evaluate the amount of time you can control a player.
When reviewing the rosters remember that some players have expired because they moved to the AL...Fielder, Pujols, Rasmus, etc. They are not available to be protected or drafted. Scoresheet posts a NL Player List. This is what we use to determine eligibility.
