This is my first year since 1994 (it was play by mail then) and I want to make sure I understand how defence works.

As a general rule you are penalized when playing a guy out of position. But if I have 2 shortstops with really good range, wouldn't this be the one situation where it's ok to play a guy out of position? In other words if I play Alexei Ramirez (SS 4.81) at 1B he should still have good range if I understand it correctly?

It seems in the AL there is a big drop off at 1B after the big guys so I'm trying to understand if it makes sense to play a SS with a high OPS there?

Thanks for any thoughts/advice.
