TO FORMAT AND READ E-MAIL RESULTS:

We send results as attached text files, which you should be able to open in virtually any word processing program, text editor, or web browser. We suggest you simply double-click on the attachment icon, or use whatever other method your e-mail program provides to open and save attachments. Your results can then be viewed and printed by Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, Notepad, or any other similar program. You may want to change that program's default text size and fixed-width font to Courier New 9, Courier 9, "smaller", or whatever looks good and allows you to view 107-character wide lines on your size screen and printer. For more detailed tips and suggestions, please read the rest of this note.

*NOTE: If you are having problems opening these attached results, try adding .txt (include the period before txt) to the end of the file name before opening it.

Our results are set up to print on our Laser Printer, using a small fixed width font, a rather small type size, and lines 107 characters long. You will have to do a little formatting to have your reports print out like they should. The first time it will probably take you a few minutes of experimenting, and then in future weeks it should take you less than a minute.

Microsoft Word is what we use as our word processing program. The following instructions work on our system, and should roughly translate to whatever computer and word processing program you are using. The steps to follow are:

1) If necessary, save your e-mail message's attachment. When saving, if you are asked how you want the file saved, choose text only. (It's simpler to just open the attachment from inside your e-mail program instead of saving it, if that works for you. This basically combines steps 1 and 2.)

2) Open the saved file in some word processing program. Once again, when opening the file, if asked, open as text only (NOT as text with formatting, and NOT as text with layout).

3) After the attachment file is open, you may need to select the whole document and change the font to a fixed width font. (A fixed width font means all the characters are the same width. For example, with a fixed width font an i and an x take up the same amount of space, enabling letters to line up in a straight line. Either Courier or Monaco are the normal fixed width fonts. A web browser like Internet Explorer or a simple program like Notepad will probably already use a fixed-width font for files that end in ".txt", but a word processor like Microsoft Word probably will not.) Then, make the font smaller (size 9 or 10) to help all the text fit in one line.

4) Finally, make the margins smaller (.45 inches or so.) Or, you can also set your page set-up to print out the reports 'sideways', meaning there will be more length per line, giving you room to use a larger type size.

If you save your file as text with layout, or text with formatting, then your word processing program will probably stick carriage returns at the end of lines to enable them to fit on the page. But, if you save the file as text only, and then use a fixed width font with a small type size (courier 9 or 10), and make your margins small, then each line should fit on the page, without being broken up. (Or, as mentioned above, you might prefer printing sideways, in "landscape mode".)

Computers are all different - these are general instructions that should work for most computers. Do a little experimenting, and if you are having problems maybe a friend or co-worker can help out. All we have at Scoresheet are Macintosh computers - if you have a different system I doubt there is much we can tell you other than the above steps (sorry). However, please do give us a call if this is not working for you - we will do our best to help you out, or can at worst switch you back to postal results.

Have Fun - Scoresheet

P.S. Also, as you probably know, each league has its own web page. To get to your league's web page, first go to our web page that lists all the leagues, and then click on your league's name/link.
