As a kid in Ohio, Buckeye trees were everywhere you looked. The jacket (or outside) is soft, leather-like with spikes. When they hit the ground we would pick up them up and make Buckeye Necklaces. Usually we would find these with one, two or even three buckeyes in one spiked jacket. Well, one day I found four in one jacket and kept these.
Once I learned to drive, I strung the four buckeyes and kept them as my good luck charm in the glove compartment. They have been in six cars that I have owned. They current reside in Purdyz, my 1999 BMW Z3.
History of the Buckeye: When Ohio was the West, Indians used the buckeye for hunting fish in ponds. They would crush up the Buckeyes and throw them into the water. This would stun the fish and make them an easy target to hunt. Buckeyes are edible only after they have been heated and leached.
Now, The Ohio State Tree is the Ohio Buckeye!
