Davis Hires Jackson Now What About Cable

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Will he or won’t he.   Oakland Raider’s owner Al Davis has to be used to being  an unpopular guy.   He doesn’t do what other NFL owners do. Ever.  For instance, generally before hiring assistant coaches, an NFL team would confirm or  even hire, their head coach.  And then allow the head coach to hire the offensive and defensive coaches.

Al Davis was reportedly going to fire Tom Cable.  Then he was reported to be interviewing possible replacements.  Then last Saturday, Davis confirmed Cable would stay out his contract. ESPN ran with that.  And then the Raiders declined to confirm.  So depending on which sports channel you get your news from…Cable is either staying, or he’s not.

The decision to hire Hue Jackson as offensive coordinator, certainly shows the Raiders are ready to deal with their lack luster JaMarcus Russell.  The #1 draft pick of 2007, Russell has yet to deliver the goods.  Can Jackson turn him around?  As the Raven’s quarterback coach, Jackson was impressive.   My bet is that Jackson likes a challenge.  And if he can turn Russell around, perhaps he’ll work his way into a top spot on the coaching staff next season.  Perhaps even taking Tom Cable’s spot?

So is JaMarcus Russell to blame for the Raider’s 9 -19 record this year?  Or do we hold Tom Cable responsible?   Hell, does Al Davis hold Cable responsible?  He seems willing to invest in support coaching staffers, hiring Jackson before his job interview with the Chicago Bears.   Now Al, do everyone a favor and take an affirmative stand on Tom Cable.  More in 2010 or no?

Peyton Manning : Warming the Bench

Monday, December 14th, 2009

After the Indianapolis Colts celebrated an impressive 28-16 victory over the Denver Broncos, there’s speculation that Peyton Manning, in line to receive the NFL MVP title, may be warming the bench until mid-January when the Colts will play their first playoff game.

MVP votes will be cast January 4th, and some are wondering if Manning’s name will remain top of mind, if he doesn’t keep a high profile on the playing field.   While Manning has led the Colts to an amazing 13-0 start, you can bet that other contenders for the MVP title will be scrambling a bit harder than Manning to keep their teams’ SuperBowl dreams in within reach.

For instance, Brett Favre is sure to spend the next few weeks focused on a leading the Vikings towards the SuperBowl.  And what of Drew Brees?  These two stand outs are sure to have plenty of playing time in the next month.  Manning and the Colts have a full dance card to get through as well, with a match up against Jacksonville just a few days from now.

So if Manning warms the bench, will this affect the Colts drive to the SuperBowl?  Will he hurt his chance at receiving his fourth MVP title?  Or will the Associated Press, who will be casting their votes in early January,  remember his name, even from the bench?

NFL MVP Race Dominated by QuarterBacks

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

As the NFL season winds down to the finish line, who will claim the title of MVP?

It certainly appears that quarterbacks are at the top of the conversation. Drew Brees and Peyton Manning both have their teams undefeated after 12 games while the seemingly ageless Brett Favre has the Minnesota Vikings thinking Super Bowl.

A strong case could be made for all three. Each is a bonafide leader on the field and all currently have QB ratings exceeding 100, completion percentages at or near 70 percent, and have thrown for at least 25 touchdowns and 3000 yards.

So who wins?

This is one of those unique years where it is entirely possible we’ll see co-MVPs.  Favre is a media and fan favorite and arguably having his finest season at the age of 40. Brees is the toast of the town for a New Orleans Saints team that has never approached the prospect of an undefeated season and Manning has his Colts on a roll despite relying on a young mix of receivers this season after perennial favorite target Marvin Harrison was not resigned in the off season.

Stay tuned as the final weeks of the NFL season will likely decide the winner. If either the Saints or Colts finish undefeated, it would be hard not to give it to their Quarterback after such a remarkable feat.

About the only non-QB with a shot is Tennessee Titan running back Chris Johnson.  If he does indeed set a new rushing yardage record and somehow manages to get the Titans into the playoffs, then we’re looking at a four man race for the coveted award.

What’s your take?

Dallas Cowboys:: A Win is a Win

Monday, November 23rd, 2009
Ok, I admit it. I did NOT watch the Cowboys game on Sunday. Now before y’all start throwing stuff at me and calling me all sorts of nasty names let me explain. It was the closing ceremonies for my 10 year olds softball season and she was getting an award. Some diehard fans are still screaming, “NO EXCUSE IS GOOD ENOUGH!” Get over it.
The real point of this is not whether or not I saw the game; it’s about a win being ugly. Since when do we rate the ‘beauty’ of a win? There were enough interesting things that occurred this past Sunday during the game to keep us riveted to the talking heads for days:
1.        “Never Miss” Suisham missed twice,
2.       10 minute delay while the refs argued about in bounds or out of bounds on Campbell,
3.       3 injuries in the first half,
4.       Newman’s loving pawing of Campo.
Just to name a few. See…it’s almost like I was there!
Fact of the matter is Dallas came from behind with barely a breath left in the game and pulled it off. Romo managed, hurt back and all, to eke out a 10 yard touchdown pass to Crayton and then Spencer pulled off his first ever interception. I bet Spencer’s thinking that was pretty darn gorgeous!
Bottom line is…DALLAS WON THE GAME…fair and square, matters not the ‘beauty’ of the win.
And isn’t beauty in the eye of the beholder, anyway?

Legal Woes for Tennessee Volunteers

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

When you take a look at the SEC football powerhouse teams, what do Georgia, Tennessee and Florida have in common?  Since 2005, there have been 73 arrests among their scholarship players. Yikes!

Lane Kiffin is starting out his coaching career at Tennessee a little rough, but you can tell he is running a clean program. Don’t laugh.

Why do players who have everything “handed to them” choose to break the law?  Maybe the scholarship grass isn’t as green as we all may think.

Clean programs with big booster support channel their funds into training, travel and of course coaching staff to make it all happen for a program.  When you get into the fuzzy area, is when you start to see players that are never in trouble.  Most notably, the programs will start to defend NCAA allegations that their teams are “illegally supporting players.”

Typically football scholarships will cover admission costs, laundry money, food stipends and of course team related expenses and books.   If you are a star athlete and quite possibly the first of your family to head to college? Chances are you are not going to be able to work or expect much financial support from home.

Maybe these schools who run a nice clean program would like to check into the possibility of extending a little more into the “living funds” column. It sounds like a lot of kids are adjusting to sports, but not liking scrapping the barrel.

Hello Its Boise State Calling…

Hello Its Boise State Calling…
No one Wants to Play Ball
Gene Bleymaier has made an offer to all the top-10 college teams.  And no one cares.  The SEC isn’t listening and neither is Big Ten.  With a high profile and and huge following, Bleymaier theoretically has a lot to offer.
He’s put it out there that Boise State will paly any stadium, in America, against any big name team in 2011.  And the opposing team doesn’t even have to step inside the state of Idaho.  Reciprocation not required.  That’s a pretty charitable offer.  So how come no one has bit yet?  Even with ESPN reminding folks the game would be televised, on their network.
So what’s really the problem here?

Michigan Wolverines Up Security:: Buckeyes to Blame

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Bags will be banned from the University of  Michigan‘s stadium for security reasons for the remainder of the 2009 Wolverines football season.   Darn! The Wolverines must have figured out it was Buckeye fans sneaking in bags full of Buckeyes to toss at Meech-i-gan fans.   Please note that I used the word “Toss” because throwing would mean intent to inflict harm!

Actually we have film footage of Wolverines who are disappointed with their team’s recent string of losses against Ohio State.  Those shifty badgers were the ones buying Buckeyes outside the stadium and randomly throwing them!  I bet R-Rod was behind this plot.  He is shifty that way!  We know it was them because no Buckeye would throw a Buckeye at another Ohio State Fan!

The Hangover :: Oakland Raider Style

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Oakland Raiders Head Coach Tom Cable, clearly embarassed by the treatment his team received at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, has repeatedly said that his team is not the same team the Saints spanked.   While much of their practice has been out of the sight of the media, one might assume that the plan was to keep cuts and team roster on the DL.

None of the cuts were especially noteworthy or surprising, with team veterans staying safely in place.  The cuts were:  Jonathan Compas, Center;  Joe Cohen, Defensive Tackle;  and William Franklin and Shawn Bayes, both Wide Receivers.

The one rookie who might have been especially nervous following the game against the Saints was likely Louis Murphy.  With a fumble and two drops, I would have been sweating.

One might wonder what Cable has planned to improve his team’s  performance.  He actually called the Raiders performance  “a bit like a hangover.” That’s one way of putting it.  I wonder if the tiger in the bathroom would help the Raiders find their mojo? For the record, Cable is tight lipped and made no mention of tigers or crazy dudes jumping out of car trunks.  But that Raider Nation…there’s no telling.

Baltimore Ravens Rookie In Trouble with Police

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Tony Hein, an Iraqi war veteran and alumni of the University of Mississippi, got into a scuffle with police on Sunday night while at the touristy Inner Harbor in Baltimore.  Hein was signed to the Ravens in June as a free agent.    The trouble started on Sunday when a security officer thought he witnessed Hein passing a handgun to one of his companions. The security officer alerted police, and in the end, we find out the gun was really a cell phone.  That should be the end of the story.

However, according to police reports, Hein became aggressive and assaulted a police officer, which lead to his arrest.  Tony Hein’s agent claims that the arrest is the result of racial profiling, and points out that Hein was a black man wearing sweats and a hoodie, and claims the officer was overly aggressive.  Will this scuffle damage this free agent’s chances with the Ravens?  Its hard to say.

“Tony will get his due process and have his opportunity to explain,” Ravens senior vice president of public and community relations Kevin Byrne said.

No team wants a professional Public Relations nightmare on their payroll.  But, the public does soon forget the mistakes made by superstars.  Just look at Michael Vick, back in a uniform as a newly signed Philadephia Eagle, after his dog fighting nightmare.

Is there anything a super star can’t do these days and be forgiven?  Hein, it appears, was clearly innocent of carrying the weapon, but did he push the officer?  Did he resist arrest? If you were a black man in Baltimore, who felt as though you were being mistreated because of racial profiling…if you’d given more than 3 years of service to the US military, and you were simply out with friends, having dinner…would you resist?

Hopefully the Baltimore Ravens will allow this rookie to prove his worth on the field, and not in the headlines.  In this case it would appear that Hein simply had a very bad evening.  Let’s see how the story develops.

Brett Favre: the Good the Bad the Ugly

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Bret Favre arrived in Minneapolis as the starting quarterback for the Vikings amidst public frenzy and sometimes, disgust.   Favre said his decision to return to the NFL is partly because his daughter wants to see him win another Super Bowl.   Whether that will happen is way too early to be determined since it’s pre-season.  What we do know for sure is  Bret Favre is officially the Vikings quarterback bringing the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The Good

Season ticket sales for the Vikings game have skyrocketed  since Favre’s arrival in Minneapolis and sales of jersey No. 4 (Favre) have risen sharply too.  Its likely that businesses in Minneapolis will experience an increase in revenues.

The Bad

Favre should refrain from announcing his retirement publicly when he knows he still has it in him to play football.   He obviously loves the game and injury or no,  he still wants to play.  So, as long as he has the energy and remains injury free,  Favre should remain quiet about his career plans until the game is no longer in him.

The Ugly

Some football fans are seemingly frustrated with the to-be Hall of Famer’s flip flopping with retirement, and I guess the media frenzy that went along with his recent coming out of retirement after leaving the New York Jets did not help the situation either.

Twitter has been home to many thoughts on Favre…

@boobie_bby Bret Favre Retire For Good Pleaseeee…!!! Lmaooo!

@Lionslicer9999 Bret Favre will retire before the season is over, then the vikings will make it to the super bowl and he’ll unretire and win the super bowl

@GPeditor Dignity equals Bret Favre retiring as a Packer. Oops — blew that. Well, maybe just one dismal Jet season for the ego and then out.  Oops…

What do you think about Favre putting a uniform back on?
